**Zoe Underhill** (1847-1934) was the daughter of Charles A. Dana, the renowned publisher of the *New York Sun* from 1868 till his death in 1897. She inherited from her father a passion for the railways and, like him, she became a multi-linguist and translator with a keen interest in folk tales. Probably her best known work was a translation of various European fairy tales as *The Dwarf's Tailor* (1896). When she died in 1934 she was believed to have been the last living person to have been a friend of Abraham Lincoln as she had regularly visited the White House during the American Civil War when her father was assistant secretary of war. She was active as a journalist, poet and short-story writer.
