A senior British civil servant, Sir Ernest Gowers was the author of both *Plain words* (1948) and *The ABC of plain words* (1951). These two works he later combined and revised as *The complete plain words* (1954). He went on to revise H. W. Fowler's evergreen work *Modern English usage* (1965).
