Though Henry VIII originally broke with the Church of Rome due to his desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon, the basis of the Anglican Church as a unique entity was formed by 39 Articles, written in 1562 by Matthew Parker, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in conjunction with Queen Elizabeth, the "Supreme Defender of the Faith."
