Gilt tooled spine, with red spine label lettered ‘milton/agst. k.c’, and the 19th-century manuscript Minto book label on inner pastedown. Third edition, first issue, before the addition of the pasted-in single leaf bearing the ‘Anglesey Memorandum’: see F. Madan, A new bibliography of the Eikon Basilike of King Charles the first, with a note on the authorship. London, 1950, 162. The ‘Eikon Basilikè’ was originally attributed to Charles I but was probably written by John Gauden based on a core of material which the king had himself composed.
