Il volume indaga le ragioni per cui la paura ha indotto molti a disputare su Gerusalemme senza esserci mai andati. La tragedia del Medio Oriente viene quindi affrontata inseguendo le forme, i modi e i tempi attraverso cui alcuni protagonisti della letteratura italiana - tra questi Ungaretti. Buzzati, Montale, Flaiano, Silone, Moravia, Meneghello - hanno saputo vincere la paura e si sono messi in movimento, con il piroscafo e con la penna. Matilde Serao, Angelo De Gubernatis, Orio Vergani erano stati i loro illustri precursori. La ricerca nasce dalla convinzione che la letteratura sappia sempre offrire un'angolatura alternativa alla storia e, quindi, proporre una scansione degli eventi diversa da quella della politica internazionale"--

The book deals with the theme of traveling to Jerusalem in the Italian literary culture of the twentieth century. In the period under review (from the end of Ottoman rule to 1967), Jerusalem is by far the most feared city and therefore the least talked about by writers-travelers. The volume explores the reasons why fear has led many to dispute about Jerusalem without ever having gone. The tragedy of the Middle East is thus tackled by following the forms, ways and times through which some protagonists of Italian literature (among them Ungaretti. Buzzati, Montale, Flaiano, Silo, Moravia, Meneghello) managed to overcome fear and moved, with the steamer and with the pen. Matilde Serao, Angelo De Gubernatis, Orio Vergani were their illustrious precursors. The research arises from the belief that literature can always offer alternative angulation to history and, therefore, propose a scanning of events other than that of international politics.
