While the bulk of histories emphasize the struggle through which the southern whites adjusted to post-slavery life, this book also focuses on the social, economic, and political forces that wrought positively for progress in the North. With minimal emphasis on the Ku Klux Klan and carpet-baggers, legislation and fraud, this book focuses on the politics of the North and West.
