8vo. ff. [2] (blank), pp. v, [27], 352 (p. 248 misnumbered as 228), f. [1] (blank). Calf, tooled edges, double gilt filets with corner ornaments on boards, gilded spine on 5 bars with brown panel. Edges spread in red. Bookseller's device on title page. Engraved initials, head- and tailpieces. Text misprinted on lower corner of p. 40. Poems collected by the minor playwright, poet, and critic Lewis Theobald, who is otherwise best known for ‘Double Falsehood, or the Distrest Lovers’ (1728, see Bib# 4103197/Fr# 712 in this collection), a play he claimed to have ‘revised and adapted to the stage’ from a manuscript version ‘written originally by W. Shakespeare.’ In the preface to his own translation of ps-Musaeus, Hero and Leander, in urging the great antiquity of that poem, Theobald casually dismisses the opinions of Scaliger, Heinsius, Vossius (on Onomacritus) and Bentley (on Phalaris).
