Humanity is naturally "pagan" (i.e., religious). The author views "pagan religions" as evidence of humankind's innate relationship with God. But, he also wants to distinguish the novelty of the Judeo-Christian revelation (Jesus, the Bible, Christian sainthood and mysticism) from the world's religions.
