A random sample was drawn in the 17 largest states in terms of electoral vote. Respondents were asked to state their partisan preferences, to specify major problems confronting the nation, and to compare the presidential candidates on such issues as welfare, government corruption, China, jobs, defense, and taxes. Specific questions were asked about Nixon's and McGovern's public image. Demographic information includes education, occupation, income, religion, and marital status.
