Black Britain
Description
Spanning over 200 years, this unprecedented collection features images of Black Britons at work, at war, on stage and on the playing field.
Photographing Black Britain is one of numerous books and articles stemming from Gilroyʹs longstanding scholarly investment in documenting and theorizing the condition of "Black Britain". The political impetus behind it is to write a history of black settlement through the use of archival photographs that continue to be largely ignored; as Gilroy argues, "This is a history that, even now, those who are complacent, powerful and indifferent to the suffering of Britainʹs minorities find easy to overlook" (p. 29). But what also underlies the book is the notion that the photographs themselves are able to tell the story in a way that adds to and sometimes escapes existing accounts of this history. -- Description from http://www.tandfonline.com (Jan. 5, 2012).
