Description
The diary of Isabel Espejo is one of the few that exist of Chilean women at the end of the 19th century, and joins those of Amalia Errázuriz and Inés EcheverrÃa. It gives a good description of society in the port city of Lebu, founded less than twenty prior to her arrival, with wooden houses and a large number of gold prospectors. She accompanies her husband Manuel Carrera Pinto, named intendant of Arauco by President AnÃbal Pinto. The diary offers a glimpse at the life of elite Chilean women of that time.
