This study of contemporary Spain is being published in two parts. The present section deals with the legacy of the Civil War. The process of Spain’s adaptation to the postwar world, social and economic developments, changes inside the Church, and developments on the domestic scene up to the assassination of Prime Minister Carrero Blanco in December 1973.

Part Two, to be published as Washington Paper 19, presents an analysis of the main political forces active in Spain today. such as the Falangists and the other “political families” of the regime. It covers the “aperturistas,” the aspirations of the center and left-wing groups, and surveys minority problems.

Dr. Hottinger concludes his two-part study with a discussion of the “winds of change” likely to affect the political and social development of Spain during the years to come.
