Description

In 2006 Katie Mitchell and her collaborators devised an original work for the National Theatre which seamlessly transposed the pointillist vision of Virginia Woolf's experimental novel The Waves into an entirely new form. The intertwining narrative of six friends--from childhood to maturity and beyond--was remembered into a series of beautiful and poignant images on a screen by live actors and musicians incorporating techniques taken from theatre, radio and video production. This deconstruction of the novel and the theatrical method made process and product visible simultaneously and conveyed a uniquely moving and exhilarating experience to the audience. In 2008 the production was revived by the original team at the National Theatre before touring nationally and internationally. This book combines the text used with the corresponding images to create a record of that production.--[book cover].
